Fall 2026 Community Education Classes and Experiences

Mat-Su College is excited to announce the return of our Community Education classes, designed to provide engaging, non-credit learning opportunities for the public. Whether you're looking to develop a new skill, explore a creative passion, or simply meet others with similar interests, our community education courses are here to inspire and connect.

These classes are open to everyone—no prior experience or academic requirements needed! From arts and crafts to professional development, there’s something for all ages and interests.

Theater

Improvisation Theater
 
This is a fun-loving, confidence building class that explores the use of role play to explore creativity and build a sense of community.  Students will experience team building activities using the drama skills of creating tableau, pantomimed action, use of representative props and costumes to bring original and simple scripts to life. Students will experiment with the use of voice, body, imagination, and cooperative team work to explore playwriting. Elements of Playback Theater will be introduced. This is a form of theatre that combines real-life storytelling with improvised dramatization. Class will meet once per week for eight weeks. Each session is two hours.
Fee: $150

Taking the Stage: Scene Work
 
Students participate in drama games, improvisation and work a presentation of staged scenes (memorization not required) and original monologues of moments from their own lives. This is a fun-loving, team building class -- moving one out of a feeling of isolation, and stepping into a creative endeavor with others. This class culminates with a sharing of scenes for invited guests. Class will meet once per week for seven weeks. Each session is two hours.
Fee: $135

Dance

Let's Dance: Your Own Spin
 
This class is open to anyone who has some experience with standard traditional social dances such as Disco, Cha-Cha, Waltz, Tango, Swing, Fox Trot, Polka, Jig, and/or Can-Can. In this class, you will learn how to choreograph your own variations of these traditional social dances. Choreography helps to fire up your brain. Learning how to transition each step to the music, and feeling comfortable with each movement, will give you the confidence to dance with a partner in new ways. We keep it easy to learn, so join us, and have fun putting your own spin on these traditional social dances. The class meets once a week for eight weeks. Each session is 90 minutes.

Let’s Dance: Introduction to Social Dance

Learn easy steps in social dance so you can experience the joy of dancing. This beginner class is open to everyone; even experienced dancers can benefit from this class. After learning a few steps, you can feel confident enough to dance with someone.  In eight weeks, you can learn the Cha Cha, Waltz, and Disco. These dances have basic steps which will enable you to continue to learn other styles of dance, such as Tango, Swing, Fox Trot, and a few Character dances.
Fee: $160

The Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Course is designed for anyone with little or no medical training who needs an OSHA-compliant course completion card—or anyone who simply wants to be ready to respond in an emergency. Please contact your employer to ensure that you are selecting the correct course.

The BLS Provider Course is designed for healthcare professionals and trained first responders who provide care to patients in a wide variety of settings, as well as individuals enrolled in a healthcare training program. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a course completion eCard, valid for two years. Please contact your employer to ensure that you are selecting the correct course.

American Heart Association
Advanced Life Support (ACLS)
Friday, November 7, 2026

ACLS is designed for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiac arrest, stroke, or other cardiopulmonary emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, critical care/intensive care, and surgery such as Physicians, Nurses, and Paramedics, as well as others who need an ACLS course completion card for a job or other requirement. This is a refresher course and previous ACLS training is required. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a course completion card, valid for two years. Please contact your employer to ensure that you are selecting the correct course.

TIME:  9:00 am – 5:00 pm (1-hour lunch break)

Notice of Availability:Annual Security and Fire Safety Report

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report is available online at: www.uaa.alaska.edu/safety. The report contains information regarding campus safety and security including topics such as: campus law enforcement authority; crime reporting policies; campus alerts (Timely Warnings and Emergency Notifications); fire safety policies and procedures; programs to prevent dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking; the procedures the University will follow when one of these crimes is reported; and other matters of importance related to security on campus. The report also contains information about crime statistics for the three most recent calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus; in On-Campus Student Housing Facilities; in Noncampus buildings or property owned or controlled by the University or a recognized student organization; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus. The report also contains fire statistics for any fires occurring in an On-Campus Student Housing Facility during the three most recent calendar years.
