As an Advisor for a Student Club/ Organization you are identified as a Campus Security Authority.  As part of the federal law, we are required to regularly identify and train our campus security authorities, annually, regarding their Clery crime reporting responsibilities. Visit the Mat-Su Food Bank and show your student ID card to receive a food package sponsored by the Mat-Su College Student Government, Mat-Su Health Foundation, and the Mat-Su Food Bank.

What Do The Officers Of Student Government Do?   

 Becoming a Student Government Officer is an excellent way to influence campus life -- and it looks great on a resume.  

  • President

    Summary:

    The ASMSC President serves a one-year term beginning May 15th through May 14th of the following year. The President acts as the official spokesperson for the Associated Students of Mat-Su College, and provides leadership, support, and direction for ASMSC Student Government as an organization. In this role, the President appoints numerous student representatives to serve on boards and committees within the University to offer student voice and opinion. He or she holds authority to approve or veto ASMSC legislation. The President plays a key role in the quality of student life on campus.

    The ASMSC President is eligible for a service award of up to the equivalent of 12 credits per semester.

    ASMSC Constitutional Duties:

    • Call and preside over all ASMSC and Council meetings. 
    • Act as the official spokesperson and have signature authority for ASMSC. 
    • Exercise the option to veto Council legislation in writing within six (6) days after receiving an engrossed and enrolled copy. On the seventh (7) day, if not vetoed, the legislation will go into effect. The council may override the veto by two-thirds (2/3) vote by the second (2) meeting of the council following a veto from the President. 
    • Appoint senators to serve on boards and ad-hoc committees, fill vacancies as necessary by appointment, and will have the power to rescind such appointments subject to a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the Council. 
    • Work with and train the President-elect for the time between certification of the election and installation of the new President to ensure continuity. 
    • Be an ex-officio member of all committees of the ASMSC. 
    • Have authority to vote in the occurrence of a tie during meetings upon the absence of the Vice President.  The President only has the right to vote on all matters before the Legislative Council if Article Three, Section One, Clause Six of the ASMSC Constitution is in effect.
    • Have the authority to co-sign requisitions for the ASMSC in all financial matters.
    • Have the authority to bring motions to the floor. 
  • Vice President

    Summary:

    The ASMSC Vice President serves a one‐year term beginning May 15th through May 14th of the following year. The Vice President helps to develop the leadership potential of other Council members and works with the Council and its committees to ensure that ASMSC events and programs are successful. The Vice President attends all Student Government meetings and votes only in case of a tie. Should the President resign, be impeached, be recalled, or become unable to perform his or her duties, the Vice President assumes the role of President. The Vice President performs the duties of the President in temporary absence or inability of the President. The Vice President will serve as an ex‐officio member of all committees of the Council.

    The ASMSC Vice President is eligible for a service award of up to the equivalent of 9 credits per semester.

    ASMSC Constitutional Duties:

    • Attend all meetings of the Council and may only vote in the case of a tie except under Article Three, Section One, Clause Six. 
    • Work with the Council and its committees to ensure that ASMSC events and programs are successful. 
    • Be an ex-officio member of all committees of the Council. 
    • Develop the leadership potential of Council members by providing assistance and guidance. 
    • Become President upon the resignation, impeachment, recall, or incapacity of the President to fulfill the remainder of the term of office. In addition, the Vice President will perform the duties of the President in the temporary absence or inability of the President. 
    • Have the authority to co-sign requisitions for the ASMSC in all financial matters. 
    • Have the authority to bring motions to the floor.
  • Senator

    Summary:

    ASMSC Senators are elected to represent the diversity of student experiences at Mat-Su College. They serve a one-year term beginning May 15th through May 14th of the following year.  ASMSC Senators hold voting power on the ASMSC Council and may author or sponsor legislation, record official feedback, and propose allocation of ASMSC funds. Each ASMSC Senator will be assigned to one standing committee. All ASMSC Senators are required to hold office hours in the ASMSC office or conduct ASMSC business for two hours/week in addition to regular Council meeting attendance. 

    There can be up to 10 Senators.

    ASMSC Constitutional Duties:

    • Senators initiate and act upon legislation on behalf of the membership of ASMSC. 
    • Senators shall assist in the planning and implantation of student forums as necessary to support the mission of ASMSC. 
    • Each Senator must serve on one (1) board or committee as appointed by the President. 
    • In addition to regular attendance at Council meetings, each Senator is required to serve office time in the Council office or conduct ASMSC business for at least two hours of each week that classes are in session during the fall and spring semesters.

     

  • Club Representative

    Summary:

    ASMSC Club Representatives act as the liaison between their clubs and ASMSC.  They keep the Council informed about club activities, and have a vote on matters brought before the Council.

    ASMSC Constitutional Duties:

    • Attend ASMSC regular meetings
    • Keep the Council informed about their club's activities
    • Keep their clubs informed about Council activities
    • Vote on behalf of their clubs on matters brought before the Council
    • All officially recognized Student Clubs must send a representative to Council meetings
